MATILDA OF CANOSSAMatilda the Great Countess«She could converse fluently in four different languages, and could correspond in Latin with the great men her contemporaries; she wrote her letters herself without the aid of a clerk».(Nora Duff, Matilda of Tuscany, La Gran Donna d’Italia, Introduction)Matilda, Marquise of Tuscany, is known worldwide for the episode of the Emperor and the Pope meeting at her castle in Canossa. The expression “going to Canossa” means repentance or contrition in several European languages. Matilda was the last, legendary and unparalleled representative of feudalism in a society that, at the end of the eleventh century, was inevitably changing. She understood the need of a compromise between Empire and Papacy and worked for it. Her myth lived on for centuries in several regions of Central-Northern Italy. The seriesThe International Inner Wheel Club of Monza (Italy) C.A.R.F. has conceived, supported and promoted the realization of the cultural project “Queens of Italy – Women in Power in Medieval Italy”, series of multimedia narratives presenting four Medieval Italian politically relevant women.Starting with Theodelinda (570-627) from Monza, in the north of Italy, we proceed to Canossa in the Lands of Matilda of Tuscany (1046-1115), center of Italy, then with Constance of Hauteville (1154-1198) to Palermo, in the island of Sicily, south of Italy, and eventually to Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean sea, with Eleanor of Arborea (1340-1404). The project aims at sketching the personalities of these queens, highlighting their political influence and their capacity of dealing as peers with all the most prominent political powers of their time – kings, emperors, popes – with the restless and ever-changing Middle Ages in the background, identifying and studying in depth those themes which, throughout history, they contributed to evolve, both in the short and in the long term. Indeed, these queens are the protagonists of events rooted in their local contexts, and yet strictly connected to the history of Italy and Europe. And their modernity It is enclosed in a sentence written for Matilda by Nora Duff that is perfect for each of them: «And in a way, the way of perfect liberty of action, she is curiously akin to the women of our own century» (Nora Duff, Matilda of Tuscany, La Gran Donna d’Italia).
